Hillbilly Boogie

Columbia-1994

Between 1945 and the early 50s, the hillbilly boogie subgenre rode high on the airwaves and in dancehalls, particularly in the southwest. The music is an energized amalgam of big-band jazz, blues, Mexican canciones, string-band music, European polkas, gospel, and folk, and exudes a rollicking, devil-may-care spirit. Plenty of hot lap-steel solos, fiddle runs, and boogie piano passages spark instrumental breaks, but there's the occasional trumpet, accordion, electric guitar, harmonica, and clarinet, too. Thirteen songs, seven instrumentals from performers like Cooley, Bob Wills, Al Dexter, Leon McAuliffe, Johnny Bond and others provide nearly an hour of the ``no-holds-barred beat of... musicians behavin' like adrenaline-crazed cowboys.'' Superb notes by Artie Traum describe the music, the artists, and the social context of tunes like ``Give Me a Red Hot Mama and an Ice Cold Beer.'' Highly recommended (quelle: cdnow)
