Atemberaubendes Debut einer portugiesischen Künstlerin, Carbon 7)
Zunächst raubt es einem fast dem Atem, dann lauscht man nur noch wie gebannt. Selten hat man so viel Reife, so viel Können im Debut einer Sängerin gehört, schon gar nicht, wenn diese noch keine 25 Jahre alt ist.Das Repertoire aus portugiesischen und brasilianischen Songs wird auf die einzigartige und unbeschreibliche Art der portugiesischen Volksmusik, des Fado, vorgetragen, quasi eingefärbt. Das gelingt so eindrucksvoll und doch so einfach, nämlich durch Lula Penas melancholische Stimme und ihr akzentuiertes Gitarrenspiel, daß diese Musik einen berührt, einen in die Lage versetzt, jede einzelne Note mitzu'erleben'
.
"Phados" ist mehr als ein gelungenes Debut, es ist das erste Dokument einer wundervollen Stimme, einer Musik, deren Integrität, Anmut und Ehrlichkeit, v.a. aber Emotionalität nichts hinzuzufügen ist.
Das kleine belgische (!) Label Carbon 7 baut in Deutschland gerade erst sein Vertriebsnetz auf, ich rate also bei der Suche zur Geduld. Es lohnt sich. [sal]

"Here is an album by Lula Pena which bewilders, amazes and inspires your imagination. This consistant collection of songs, sung in Portugese, is meloncholic to the extreme. The songs, some traditional, are all in the "Fado" mood with sparse instrumentation i.e. acoustic guitar.
Lula has a low, rich, smooth voice which creates a thick, dark atmosphere. She must be memorable to see live singing these magical songs. As a comparison, her voice is akin to the seasoned present day master of despare, Leonard Cohen, on some of his slower tracks i.e."Gypsy's Wife", while the guitar style is as sparse as Cohen's early work i.e. "Joan Of Arc", "Famous Blue Raincoat" etc.
Lula states that" At first, I ran away from Fado, from its melodrama and I used to parody the genre. But then I was overwhelmed by the melodies, captured by its depth and I realised that Fado was greater and stronger than derision. In fact I was running away from myself".
This album sounds like it must be a labour of love from an artist who has imagination and a passion for her music but more importantly talent to match. After listening to earlier forms of this type of music, Lula Pena can only be congratulated for this new addition to the genre.
