"The mother of all open-air jazz extravaganzas
began as a dream. George Wein, the doctor's son
from Boston who played swing piano, ran a club
called Storyville. One evening he was approached
by Louis and Elaine Lorillard, of the tobacco
Lorillards. Summers in Newport, Rhode Island,
were terribly boring, they said. Couldn't George
liven up the scene?

Into this bastion of Gilded Age splendor and
discreet New England practicality, George
presented the inaugural Newport Jazz Festival in
July 1954. Soon, Duke, Monk, Miles, Trane, Pops,
Prez, Pee Wee, Shorty, Cootie, Clark, Benny,
Dave, Zoot, Hawk and Mother Mahalia were
the new face of American royalty; Count Basie and
Lady Day became as famous as Commodore Vanderbilt
and Lady Astor.

Fifty years later, Newport is still swinging.
These 28 songs are a testament not only to
George's discerning taste but also his keen ear
and appreciation for the musicians that fans
wanted to see."
