AMG review:

Coming off a double Oscar win for his Breakfast at Tiffany's score, Henry Mancini produced this score for the Howard Hawks-directed, John Wayne-starring safari comedy. This is at first a fun blend of jazz and Afro-exotica, jungle drums mixed with a classic bop combo. Elsewhere, however, the soundtrack opts for some pleasant, but very Western jazz, only stopping for the African instrument-sampler "The Sounds of Hatari," which features some nice treated piano. The filmmakers were probably hoping that the Mercer and Carmichael song "Just for Tonight" would be as much a success as Tiffany's "Moon River," but if Hatari! is memorable for anything, it's for the incredibly goofy "Baby Elephant Walk," which has gone on to be infamous musical shorthand for kookiness of any stripe. Get this tune in your head and it sticks. — Ted Mills

Les Baxter is perhaps the exotica movement's most important composer. His grand style of composition has an epic feel to it that sets his music in a class all its own

For a large portion of the world's population, the drum is the most frequently used instrument for communication and stimulating emotions. This has been true for untold centuries.

Les Baxter first became aware of the power of the power of percussion in the 1940s while touring the Caribbean. In Cuba, in particular, he was thrilled with the many types of drums he saw played, and the infinite variations in rhythm and timbre possible. Baxter's rich experiences as a traveler led to his frequent employment of unusual and unhackneyed rhythmic effects in his many orchestral and chorus records that followed.

Would you just look at those fresh faced kids on the cover, it was a different world back then. Les recorded this record as a follow up to his successful "Skins" release a few years earlier. The cover states that none of the music was written down, they went into the studio, started knocking around on various percussion, played some sax and a record was born. This is a swinging set of Afro-Cuban, Brazilian and Puerto Rican thumpers and will grab any room full of party goers and have them up and dancing the night away (as you can see by the back cover illustration). And lucky for us, the cover also tells us, "This microphonic microgroove recording cannot become obsolete". Man, one listen could've told me that! (quelle:
