William Gibson : Neuromancer

Engl. hörbuch (Time Warner /1994)

Read by William Gibson
abridged by Jeffrey Gorney text edited by John Whitman
original music by Stuart Argabright, William Barg and Black Rain music by U2
words by The Edge

GIBSON'S WRY DRAWL is the perfect voice for his labyrinthine tale of a double quest--of a pervasive artificial intelligence to achieve liberation, and of chilling human efforts to prevent that. The grittiness of the world portrayed, plus Gibson's skillful prose texture, set off a whole subgenre of science fiction called "cyberpunk." The novel, Gibson's first, won all three of the major science fiction awards when it came out in 1984--The Hugo, The Nebula, and The Philip K. Dick. Though I've read the book three times, there were parts I still didn't quite get until I heard them from Gibson himself on this tape. Among other things, a startling undercurrent of humor comes through.
Neuromancer is the single most influential science fiction book of the late twentieth century. Adroitly abridged--you miss nothing of the book's plot or characterization--the tape is subtly enhanced by voice-processing along with background and bridge elements of music. This is a high-production-value work by Time Warner, but it doesn't try to knock you over. Everything serves the story.
